Dr. Peabody’s “The Care of the Patient” is the reprint of an address delivered in 1927 to students at the Harvard Medical School in Boston where he was chief of the Medical Service at the Boston City Hospital. The timeless message of his address has not lost its value today when physicians are confronted with unprecedented new challenges.
From the time that the booklet was given to me as a house staff at the Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital by my attending Dr. Smythe who was also the first dean of my medical school the Aga Khan University, my philosophy of care has been as follows.
“The good physician knows his patients through and through, and his knowledge is bought dearly. Time, sympathy and understanding must be lavishly dispensed, but the reward is to be found in that personal bond which forms the greatest satisfaction of the practice of medicine. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.”
