The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) had the honor of participating in the third annual Nephrology Business Leadership University (NBLU) 2018, held in Dallas, TX, at the headquarters of U.S. Renal Care (USRC). The event was hosted by USRC, the Dallas Renal Group, and UC San Diego.
This unique weeklong program is designed for second-year nephrology fellows, offering them the opportunity to engage with a diverse faculty comprising practicing nephrologists from both private practices and academic settings, as well as hospital and dialysis executives. These professionals shared invaluable insights into leadership, the business of nephrology, and the evolving healthcare landscape.
ASN specialists from the ASN Policy and Public Affairs Department led a session titled “Public Policy for the Next Generation Nephrologist” and participated throughout the week. The session, presented by Zachary Kribs, Government Affairs Specialist, and David White, Policy and Advocacy Specialist, focused on key developments on Capitol Hill and regulatory proposals from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Fellows expressed interest in how to get involved, engage in congressional outreach, and voice concerns about the proposed revisions to the Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes. ASN is currently preparing its comments on these changes.
“The goal of NBLU is to create an environment where fellows from across the country can come together to learn the economics of healthcare and acquire the leadership skills necessary for success,” said Louise Jacobson, Senior Director of Physician Relations at USRC and one of the event organizers.
Jacobson further explained that the program utilizes interactive teaching methods, allowing fellows to explore topics such as marketing, alternative roles in nephrology, value-based care, policy and advocacy, billing and coding, and social media. By the end of the program, fellows leave better equipped to chart their career paths and armed with the tools they need to succeed in the nephrology field.
