DUNCANVILLE, Texas — Alastair Howie, a chaplain with no prior experience in the building trade, has become a central figure at DeFord’s Lumber Company in Duncanville.
“We all face challenges in life,” said Howie, who was hired as a chaplain four years ago. “We don’t leave them at home. We bring them to work. So, we address everything from marital problems to financial struggles, addiction, and a range of other personal issues.”
The role of a chaplain in the workplace is becoming more common as companies recognize the benefits of offering emotional and spiritual support to their employees. For Howie, it's not just about offering advice; it's about being there when people need it most, offering a listening ear, and supporting their well-being in times of hardship.
